In the news, the main role are not the stars, but the great mums who make this world go around. How do we say Mother’s Day in Chinese language? It is 母亲节(mǔ qīn jié). "母亲" means “mother”. In Chinese, 母亲 is kind of a normal word, which is often used in written Chinese and always to show respect, while 妈妈 is an oral expression, mostly used in daily Chinese conversations. "节" is short for 节日(jié rì) which means “festival” or “Day” in Chinese. In Chinese culture, there are many “Days” such as 父亲节(fù qīn jié)-Father’s Day, 劳动节(láo dòng jié)-Labor’s Day, 中秋节(zhōng qiū jié)-Mid-autumn’s Day, etc.
To wish somebody a happy Mother’s Day, we put 快乐(kuài lè) after 母亲节。快乐 here is an adjective, which means “happy”. One thing we should pay attention to is that the word 快乐 comes after a specific festival when we give our wishes in Chinese, different from the grammar in English. That’s why “Happy Mother’s Day” is 母亲节快乐 instead of 快乐母亲节.
